COVID-19 has made society take a collective look at itself regarding health. Handwashing, social distancing, and proper cleaning methods are some of the ways that one can prevent the spread of COVID-19. Usually, when people singularly think about health, they think of the consumption of fruit and vegetables, working out regularly, and getting an adequate amount of sleep every day. These things will improve your health, but they’re also only a mere hindsight view of what it truly means to be responsible for your health, particularly right now. Mental health is an aspect of wellness that’s been at the forefront of many people’s lives, especially with the constant news stories regarding COVID-19. To help ease the fear and anxiety you may be experiencing, here are some grounding methods you can use to quell your nervous system.
Prayer:
With prayer, many people attach it to the area of religion. Religion and prayer are in direct correlation, but you don’t have to be a religious person to pray. Start a conversation with whomever you believe in, and talk to them as if it’s a personal conversation, rather than a structured, rigid one.
Meditation:
Meditation is one of the oldest forms of sustaining balance and stillness in one’s life.
Sometimes in our busy lives, we operate at such a fast pace that our entire mind, body, and spirit is interrupted. This leads to stress, anxiety, and fear, which can overcompensate our minds during these times. In 2017, the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) found that U.S. adults’ use of meditation in the past 12 months tripled between 2012 and 2017 (from 4.1 percent to 14.2 percent). The use of meditation by U.S. children (aged 4 to 17 years) also increased significantly (from 0.6 percent in 2012 to 5.4 percent in 2017). Being still and relaxed can restore a sense of calmness in one’s spirit and be beneficial in daily life. Apps such as Calm and Headspace do a great job of introducing meditation to beginners.
Your Energy:
Energy has everything to do with your health and well-being. Having a positive perspective on life constitutes a healthy individual. Researchers from Mayo Clinic found that positive thinking may provide an increased life span, lower rates of depression, and lower levels of distress. Furthermore, when you’re fundamentally positive, your energy will spread toward others that may not be operating on the same frequency as you.
These are just some of the many tactics that one can use to better themselves during self-quarantine. Far more than anything, health should be your top priority at this time. Slip into a gap of silence, slow down on reading the latest news stories, and strive to stay healthy.
