Tigers make moves on deadline day for future

dombrowskiThe Detroit Tiger’s brass made a few splashes yesterday.
Speculation mounted for weeks and general manager Dave Dombrowski did not fail to deliver. The Tigers were not willing to fetch the hefty price that Price was looking to resign for at the end of the season.
“It was apparent that it really had not changed,” Dombrowski said. “There would have been a strong part of us that would have loved to keep David, but we’re also in a spot where we do have financial parameters.”
Instead of being “buyers,” the Tigers opted to sell, not just one player, but instead three starters.
David Price, Yoenis Cespedes and Joakim Soria were shipped out of Detroit for a mixture of prospects, draft picks and young talent.
It is simple, the Tigers have officially cashed in on the retooling bandwagon. Former Tiger now Mets outfielder, Cespedes didn’t agree with the Tigers’ approach.
“I don’t think that was a very smart move. The team is only three games out of the wild card, and there is still a lot of baseball to be played — about 60 games. I don’t think it was a good decision to throw in the towel this early,” said Cespedes. “There’s still a lot of baseball to be played. But I know this is a business, and I am sure they know what they’re doing.”
Price will now be throwing in a fairly decent rotation in Toronto. Cespedes is expected to bring power to the plate while being in rotation for the outfield and Pittsburgh fans are hoping that closer Soria will solidify the bullpen.
“I think part of it is that we traded good players,” said Dombrowski. “We really thought it gave us an influx, can help us next year and puts us in a good spot as far as going into next year as far as with the big-league club.”
