“The Whitmore Project” Chronicles One Detroit Woman’s Battle with Breast Cancer

In early 2024, Detroit native Lisa Whitmore Davis received a diagnosis that would alter the course of her life: breast cancer. What followed was not only a courageous fight for survival, but a transformative journey that has now been immortalized in a powerful new documentary, The Whitmore Project. More than just a film, this is a love letter to resilience, healing, and the sacred bond between family, friendship, and community.

The Whitmore Project is a deeply personal documentary that chronicles Lisa’s victorious battle with breast cancer. Through her lens—and that of her loved ones—viewers are invited into the raw, vulnerable, and often inspiring moments of her treatment and recovery. The film weaves together journal entries, candid photographs, and video footage into an intimate narrative of hope, determination, and grace.

But this project isn’t only about one woman’s journey—it’s a call to action. With sobering statistics like “1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer” (and with men also at risk), The Whitmore Project urges audiences to be more vigilant about their health, to advocate for early detection, and to support each other through the often isolating cancer experience.

Helping bring this vision to life are Lisa’s daughter, Dr. Allante Whitmore-Studmire, who served as both caregiver and co-creator, and longtime family friend Chris Wallingford, founder of Wy6 Studios. Together, this dynamic trio has crafted a story that’s equal parts documentary and devotional—an offering to those who have walked a similar path, and a light for those who may one day face it.

To celebrate and share this monumental work, a private Pink Carpet screening of The Whitmore Project was held on March 15, 2025, at the historic Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History in Detroit. This exclusive event offered a first glimpse of the film to an audience of breast cancer survivors, women’s health advocates, and cherished supporters of the creative team. It was more than a viewing—it was a gathering of spirit and strength. Feedback from this intimate showing will guide the final editing process as the film prepares for submission to local, regional, and national film festivals.

While the heart of The Whitmore Project is complete, the team is actively fundraising to cover the final stages of post-production. In a powerful move toward community-centered healing, the documentary has partnered with Eleven 24, a Detroit-based nonprofit dedicated to the health and wellness of young women. Donations made in support of the project are tax-deductible and will directly help bring this life-affirming story to broader audiences.

“We are proud to partner with Eleven 24,” says Lisa Whitmore Davis, “as their programs proactively support the health and wellness of young women—something I’m deeply passionate about.”

The Whitmore Project is more than just a film—it’s a movement grounded in love, legacy, and lifting each other up. It is a mirror for anyone who has faced adversity and chosen to rise, and a reminder that healing, when shared, has the power to change lives.
