The highly-anticipated Night tour featuring the three kings of R&B, Joe, Anthony Hamilton, and Maxwell, descended on Detroit without disappointment. The trio performing at Little Caesars Arena had downtown abuzz with couples and singles alike, pregaming waiting to be whisked away into love tones.
Joe opened with a nod to his hit theme song from the series “Power” while remixing hits from the 90s, including “I Don’t Wanna Be a Player,” — all set the stage for the Southern soul sounds of Anthony Hamilton.
Hamilton, dressed in denim donning his signature wide-brimmed fedora hat — took us back down memory lane with ballots like “The Point of It All” and “Charlene” while mixing in an homage to the late Luther Vandross with his rendition of “Superstar” from his latest album “Love Is The New Black.” However, ballots are only one side of Hamilton which he reminded the crowd as he took them down to the hood with “Comin From Where I’m From” before closing out the set.
Last but not least was the highly anticipated headliner Maxwell who intros his with a visually stunning signature set that included a large screen backdrop playing a mixture of abstract images weaved between videos of the songs he performed, starting with “If It’s Cool.” Dressed in all black with mirrored pieces outlining the bottom and cuffs of his suit — Maxwell stays classic, with his fro swaying from side to side as he dropped to the floor and leaned back, all while wooing the crowd deeper into his harmonic set.
Maxwell took the crowd on a nostalgic ride through time with hit after R&B hit of “Fortunate,” ”Bad Habits,” “Pretty Wings,” and my personal favorite, “Whenever, Wherever, Whatever,” reminding fans why he has been standing as one the top R&B singers since 1996.
