Local Volunteer Effort Part of Nationwide Commitment to Improving Homes and Lives of Veterans
On Thursday, April 26, The Home Depot Foundation will partner with Southwest Solutions to refurbish Piquette Square for Veterans, which provides permanent supportive housing to 150 formerly homeless veterans in Detroit. Piquette Square is one of the largest centers of its kind in the country, offering affordable housing, counseling, job services and more to those who served. Piquette residents express ownership and pride in their home, which opened in 2010, but the campus and individual apartments could use ongoing refurbishing to continue providing the highest quality of living.
Volunteers will transform the computer lab to encourage veterans to learn new skills, apply for jobs and coordinate benefit services. The facility’s kitchen will undergo renovations with new appliances to better cater meals and events. In addition, Piquette Square’s courtyard will receive a complete landscaping update to promote fellowship among veterans enjoying the outdoors. More than 50 members of Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, will complete the work on their day off.
This project in Detroit is part of The Home Depot’s ongoing efforts to improve the homes and lives of U.S. military veterans and their families and is a continuation of a years-long local relationship with Piquette Square. Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has transformed more than 37,000 homes and facilities for veterans across the country. Giving back to veterans is personal to The Home Depot, as more than 35,000 of the company’s associates have served in the military.
Volunteer projects will include:
- Installing new flooring
- Replacing kitchen appliances including new stoves, refrigerator and dishwasher
- Landscaping and mulching
- Painting individual apartment rooms
