Saturday, Lifetime premiered “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel”. The biopic chronicled how the Clark Sisters started from humble beginnings in Detroit to reaching a national platform, showcasing the trials and triumphs of the most celebrated female group in gospel music history.
The film debuted as the highest rated original movie of the year on all of television, bringing in 2.7 million viewers according to Nielsen. It’s Lifetime’s highest rated original movie since 2016.
The movie received a lot of love on social media as the country held a virtual watch party during quarantine. More than 700,000 interactions on social media used the hashtag #TheClarkSisters, as reported by The Daily News.
The Clark Sisters showed their appreciation via Instagram saying,
“Thank you all so much for your support! We love you!”
The church has always been a staple within the Black community, and many comments online reflected how the biopic reminded people of their childhood, growing up in church, and listening to the classic, harmonious sounds of The Clark Sisters.
Many also appreciated the singing of the cast which included:
- Angela Birchett as Jacky Clark Chisholm
- Sheléa Frazier as Dorinda Clark Cole
- Kierra Sheard as Karen Clark Sheard
- Christina Bell as Elbernita “Twinkie” Clark
- Raven Goodwin as Denise Clark Bradford
Unlike other biopics, the cast in this film re-recorded songs under the direction of Grammy award winning producer Donald Lawrence.
Sheléa Frazier took to Instagram to thank film director, and Detroit native, Christine Swanson.
“Christine you are a visionary. This movie would NOT be what it is without you. Thank you for fighting for real, authentic live singing in this film. It’s what The Clark Sisters deserved.”
“The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel” is available on video on demand. The original movie soundtrack is available for download on all major streaming services.
