PBS and ESSENCE are joining forces tonight for the premiere of The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song, which airs tonight at 9/8c, ESSENCE reported.
The series, premiering today and Wednesday, will showcase thoughts from Oprah Winfrey, John Legend and many others to discuss the church’s “powerful role” as the spiritual, cultural and political “epicenter of the African American community” according to the post on the website, https://www.pbs.org/show/black-church/.
The Black Church: This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song is a touching four-hour, two-part series from executive producer, host and writer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the Alphonse Fletcher University professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, which connects the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America, to its beginning start “as the site of African American survival and grace, organizing and resilience, thriving and testifying, autonomy and freedom, solidarity and speaking truth to power.”
The documentary showcases how Black people have displayed their love for God in worship and, through their spiritual journeys, along with connecting the dots of their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, “while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage” the website added.
