TCF Bank and Michigan Chronicle kick off the holidays with S.W.A.G. Awards Scholars

It was a festive night of reunion and celebration as TCF Bank and the Michigan Chronicle hosted former recipients of the Students Wired For Achievement and Greatness (S.W.A.G.) Scholarship Awards at the Pistons game on December 23. Reconnecting students attending college in Michigan, and those home for holiday break from schools such as Spelman College and Morehouse College, the S.W.A.G. scholars were treated to a holiday dinner and thanks to the Pistons organization, had the opportunity to watch the pre-game player warmups courtside and take a shot on the court following the game.

Since the inception of the scholarship awards in 2016, TCF Bank (formerly Chemical Bank) and the Michigan Chronicle, have awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships to deserving local students. Unlike many scholarship programs, the S.W.A.G. Awards do not focus solely on academic performance. With a minimum GPA requirement of 2.5, the awards were specifically created to ensure that more Detroit students that demonstrate leadership in areas other than grades have access to scholarships. An updated program allowing for greater investment in Detroit students will return in 2020.
