Innovative initiative allows sign-ups at any Library branch, also at new Academic Family Nights across DPS
There is still time for students to take part in the Library Card Campaign by Detroit Public Schools and Detroit Public Library as part of DPS’ Everything Literacy! Initiative.
Newly launched during a summer 2014 literacy drive and now running throughSept. 30, 2014, the program is open to all DPS students who do not have library cards and will be offered to parents attending new Academic/Family nights starting this week across DPS.
All Detroit Public Schools students who do not have library cards are invited to apply for and receive new library cards from the Detroit Public Library. DPS students may apply for and receive new library cards, and have fees waived on current cards. Fines will only be waived on student cards, not on parent cards. Students who do not have proof of residency in Detroit or parental signature will receive restricted library cards and may check out up to two books at a time.
Students and their families can visit any Detroit Public Library location to sign up.
DPS’ Everything Literacy! Initiative, organized by the district’s Office of Literacy, includes a number of strategies focusing on literacy. To combat the “Summer Learning Slide,” the learning loss that happens when children are not engaged in reading during pivotal out-of-school time,
DPS partnered with the Detroit Public Library, LitWorld and others and sponsored events including LitCamp, free book giveaways, online reading quizzes, and Literacy-themed open houses at all elementary and middle schools in the district.
