Students can pick up a new skill, explore a new subject or get ahead this summer with unique summer camps offered by Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP). Parents can match a student’s schedule and their interests with a range of STEM experiences from 2-day programs to Saturdays or a full week of classes.
Because learning should not stop in the summer, DAPCEP programs cover a range of topics from basics in math, critical thinking, and engineering to introductions in programming and electromechanical gadgets as well as sports science, filmmaking and entrepreneurship. Students can build skills through classes they might not be able to access during the school year, including SAT test prep or attending a two-week STEM academy introducing them to engineering and computer science through coding, drones, game animation and 3D printing.
New programs this summer include the first-ever camp for DAPCEP’s youngest students in grades 2-3. The Explorers in STEM Summer Camp will provide a unique view of engineering disciplines. Students will deepen their understanding of simple machines, speed, angles, slopes, collisions, kinetic energy, and potential energy. Other camp costs vary, but the Explorer Camp is only $100. Financial assistance is available for families who qualify.
There is also a two-year program starting in July for students in Oakland County. The STEM Multi-Year Academy is for current 10th grade students. Over multiple DAPCEP semesters, students will explore STEM topics, visit STEM companies and have the opportunity to earn a STEM-industry certification. The first term focuses on math.
Summer programs take place in a variety of locations including on college campuses from Lawrence Technical University to Oakland University, Michigan State University, Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, and University of Michigan. Studying on campuses at a young age gives students a glimpse into the future.
Summer programs are available to students currently in grades K – 12 with grade levels referencing the student’s current grade. To learn more, contact DAPCEP at [email protected] or 313-831-3050. Register at www.dapcep.org/summer-camps/.
