The Southfield Community Foundation announces the recipients of the Louise Ward, Southfield Mayor’s, and DENSO International America Scholarships.
The Louise Ward Memorial Scholarship, given in memory of the music teacher, who led the Southfield-Lathrup High School Madrigal Singers, supports continued studies in vocal music for a Southfield-Lathrup High School student. Camri Nelson and Lindsey Hoper each received $500 scholarships.
The $500 Mayor’s Scholarship, initiated by Southfield Mayor Brenda Lawrence has been awarded to Taylor Pitts, who graduated from Southfield-Lathrup High School and is headed to Columbia College in Chicago to major in Creative Writing.
This is the second year the Southfield Community Foundation and DENSO International America have collaborated to support a graduating senior pursuing a science degree. This year, Imani Thomas of Southfield Christian School received a $1,000 scholarship to pursue a degree in Chemistry at Spring Arbor University. She said the scholarship will be “so helpful” in allowing her to help ease the burden on her parents in paying for her education.
Southfield Community Foundation will also award the Tony Spina Scholarship to a Wayne State University or Michigan State University student majoring in photojournalism. The scholarship is given in memory of award-winning journalist and former Detroit Free Press Chief Photographer Tony Spina.
As education costs continue to rise, even a small scholarship can help minimize annual incremental increases. The Southfield Community Foundation holds six endowed scholarship funds memorializing local residents and community leaders. Founded in 1989, Southfield Community Foundation promotes community philanthropy, builds endowments and provides resources and leadership to improve the community. SCF has administered $1.8 million in grant and partnership support in the past ten years in Southfield and Lathrup Village. Visit www.scfmi.org for more information.
