Governor Snyder can’t catch a break as the latest to toss some chin rocking declarations his way is potential Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, who released a harrowing press statement earlier this week demanding that Snyder hang up his hat.
Unless you’ve been living in a cave, and heck even then you’ve no doubt heard about the lead poisoning environmental crisis ravaging the unsuspecting citizens of Flint, MI. As more and more info comes to light, those who are responsible for preventing such catastrophes keep chiming in raising all kinds of red flags and scorching allegations of debatably criminal negligence are being made as the threat of lead poisoning was made clear—yet nothing was done.
With plenty of fingers being pointed and guilt being shifted U.S. Senator Sanders wants reprisals.
In particular for the governor to bow out stating that “There are no excuses. The governor long ago knew about the lead in Flint’s water. He did nothing. As a result, hundreds of children were poisoned. Thousands may have been exposed to potential brain damage from lead. Gov. Snyder should resign,” and then continuing on in his official press release to say that “Because of the conduct by Gov. Snyder’s administration and his refusal to take responsibility, families will suffer from lead poisoning for the rest of their lives. Children in Flint will be plagued with brain damage and other health problems. The people of Flint deserve more than an apology.”
Two years back a receiver appointed by Snyder decided to cut corners and instead of drawing on water from Lake Huron made the decision to go with the contaminated waters of the Flint River in hopes of saving some bucks despite knowing the risks. The mere fact that Snyder’s Department of Environmental Quality basically said “…or nah” to adding chemicals to the water supply to prevent corrosion of the city’s pipes (which were being damaged by the polluted river) and that the state health department was fully aware of rising lead levels in children while saying zip to the public, I think it’s pretty safe to say that whether or not you support Sanders as President Michiganders should support his rallying call for concrete action to be taken on behalf of the thousands who’s lives have been rocked by this egregious ecological calamity.
