It’s not unusual for low temperatures to cause trick-or-treaters to have to wear coats over their costumes when they go from door to door collecting candy, but Halloween 2023 could bring the rare sighting of Oct. 31st snow in Detroit.
It’s only snowed seven times in Detroit in the last 151 years, but with today’s weather forecast only calling for a high temperature barely above 40 degrees and lows dipping into the high 30s, an eighth occurrence isn’t out of the question.
Accuweather forecast is predicting a temperature of 39 degrees at the start of the city’s typical 5 p.m. trick-or-treat start time, with wind gusts of up to 15 miles per hour and a 42% chance of precipitation. The good news, however, is that we’re only expected to see flurries and not very much of the snowfall is expected to accumulate or stick. (You can keep the shovels and snowblowers packed away for now.)
The weather is significantly colder than Detroit’s average Oct. 31 temperature, which Accuweather says is a high of 55 degrees and a low of 40 degrees, and last year, Detroit had unseasonably warm temperatures with the high reaching 65 degrees and the low dipping to only 53 degrees.
