Late last month, the unveiling of a statue resembling a sleeping Jesus took place in front of Ss. Peter and Paul Jesuit Church in downtown Detroit.
The piece of work is intended to represent the continuous efforts by the church to end homelessness and hunger in the Detroit area. The statue was touched, photographed and viewed by many the day of the unveiling.
“I hope it really does have an impact on the city here,” said sculptor and Ontario-based artist Timothy Schmalz.
The bronze statue is called “Sleeping Jesus” and is now home to the city’s oldest Catholic church. According to Schmalz’s website, he is responsible for many statues at renowned Catholic Church’s worldwide.
Similar works of art can be found in a handful of other cities across the world. In the state, a similar piece can be seen in front of St. John Episcopal Church in Grand Haven.
