Sista Strut Detroit 2023: Empowering Black Women in the Battle Against Breast Cancer

A Rainy Walk with a Purpose

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, the heart of Detroit was alive with unity, strength, and sisterhood as thousands of women gathered to participate in the Mix 92.3’s Sista Strut, an annual event that serves as both a show of support for breast cancer awareness and a testament to the resilience of Black women in the face of this devastating disease. Despite the rain that drenched the downtown streets, the event saw an incredible turnout that defied the weather, with women of all ages and backgrounds coming together to raise their voices and share their stories.

Breast cancer is a pervasive issue that disproportionately affects Black women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, Black women have a 40% higher breast cancer death rate. Studies show that Black women are often diagnosed at more advanced stages, face higher mortality rates, and encounter numerous disparities in healthcare access and treatment options. The Sista Strut serves as a powerful response to these challenges, offering a platform for awareness, education, and sisterhood in the fight against breast cancer.

“I walked today to represent not only myself but all the strong women in our community,” said LaTanya Jackson, a breast cancer survivor who joined the event with her daughter. “Black women face unique challenges when it comes to breast cancer, but we’re resilient, and we’re here to show that we’re not alone in this fight.”

Despite the less-than-ideal weather, the Sista Strut’s participants remained undeterred. Pink umbrellas and raincoats filled the streets, and spirited chants filled the air as the women walked in solidarity through the streets of downtown Detroit. The event began at Spirit of Detroit Plaza, and participants marched for a 1-mile route around scenic Downtown Detroit. The walk was sponsored by Henry Ford Health.

One of the highlights of the event was the speeches given by breast cancer survivors, caregivers, and supporters. Several quotes from these inspirational women serve as a testament to the event’s mission and the resilience of Black women in the face of adversity.

“When you hear breast cancer, you think of pink ribbons, but our reality is different. Black women often face delays in diagnosis and treatment, and we’re more likely to die from the disease. That’s why we need events like Sista Strut – to make our voices heard and demand change,” said Angela Harris, Breast Cancer Survivor.

Caregivers play an essential role in providing the care and support that individuals facing breast cancer require. Their support encompasses emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects, recognizing the challenges that come with this difficult journey. Many women have stood by their loved ones as they faced this devastating disease.

Keisha Davis, who is her mother’s caregiver said she walked because she is so proud of her mother.  “My mother is a survivor, and she’s, my hero. I walk with her today, and I’m so proud of her strength. I hope that events like Sista Strut inspire others to support their loved ones and take care of their own health.”

Debbie Levingston, who has lost 3 generations of family to breast cancer, said that she walks every year in remembrance and support. “I’ve lived through the pain and the heartache of watching my mother and grandmother fight for years with this disease and lose their battle sending a ripple that divide and destroyed our family unit because they were the matriarchs – the glue that kept us close and together! Although I’m thankful that the survival rate has increased over the years, I will continue support and walk in hope that one day there will be a cure.”

The event also featured various informational booths and resources on breast cancer awareness and prevention, providing participants with valuable insights into the disease and available support services. Healthcare professionals and advocates were on hand to answer questions and provide guidance.

Detroit native and renowned artist KEM, serving as the ambassador host, emphasized the importance of unity in the battle against breast cancer. He declared, “No one should face breast cancer alone, and I am here to stand with you all today.”

Radio Personality Cheron, representing Mix 92.3, brought an incredible amount of energy and fortitude to the event. Not only was she there representing Sista Strut as an organization, but she also shared her journey as a survivor. Cheron celebrated her 5-year milestone as a survivor and generously offered strength and valuable advice to the women who attended the event. “Five years ago, I didn’t know how bright my future would be. I hope my story encourages women in the fight.”

Rain-drenched but undiscouraged, women crossed the finish line to the sound of cheering crowds, applauding not only their physical resilience but also their dedication to a cause that affects their community deeply. The event was a resounding success, a testament to the determination of Black women in the fight against breast cancer, and a rallying cry for increased awareness, early detection, and improved access to healthcare.

Breast cancer is a disease that transcends age, race, and socioeconomic status, but it has a disproportionate impact on Black women. Sista Strut Detroit and other events created to spread awareness are vital in bringing attention to the unique challenges faced by these women and in fostering a supportive, inclusive community.

As the rain-soaked streets of Detroit splashed with every step taken, the women of Sista Strut walked away, not just with damp clothes but with hearts full of purpose and resolve. Their determination to conquer breast cancer and to uplift one another was a powerful reminder that sisterhood, strength, and community can overcome even the most formidable challenges. The Sista Strut Detroit 2023 was more than just a walk; it was a testament to the strength of Black women and their unwavering commitment to a brighter, healthier future.
