Detroit Mayor-elect Mary Sheffield is inviting the public to watch her swearing-in ceremony Friday, Jan. 9 at 10am at the Detroit Opera House.
The public celebration is free and open to the public.
Detroit council members, police commissioners and City Clerk Janice Winfrey will also take part of the investiture ceremony. Council members were officially sworn-in earlier this month.
“I am honored and humbled to soon take the oath as Detroit’s next mayor,” said Mayor-elect Sheffield, who will become the first woman mayor in the city’s history.
“It was important to me that we host the investiture in a space that allowed the public to attend. The people of this city have been with me every step of the way. This isn’t just my moment—this is Detroit’s moment and my administration will be the people’s administration.”
The investiture will feature performances from Detroit’s poet laureate Jessica Care Moore, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, Gospel star Kierra Sheard and Detroit Opera House soloist Brianna J. Robinson.
The event will live stream on the city’s cable channel and social media channels.
Tickets are available through the Detroit Opera website. For more information, please visit www.risehigherdetroit.com/investiture. Tickets are available on a first come, first serve basis.
Sheffield has been convening members of the public to provide feedback and suggestions ahead of her first 100 days as part of her Rise Higher transition effort.
Sheffield’s transition team says it has received over 1,200 resumes and is currently interviewing candidates to fill key roles.
In 2014, Duggan was sworn in on Jan. 2 on the 11th floor of the Coleman A. Young Municipal Building.
