Shades of Blackness”: A Vibrant Celebration of Black History Month in Detroit

Art On the Riverfront proudly presents “Shades of Blackness,” a captivating Black History Month event set to take place at Brix Wine in Detroit on February 10th, 2024, from 6 pm to 9 pm. This unique exhibition will showcase the works of 16 talented local Detroit artists, each expressing their interpretation of “Blackness” through diverse artistic disciplines.

The curated collection of artworks aims to serve as a powerful vehicle for the participating artists to communicate their individual perspectives on “Blackness.” From exploring cultural roots and historical narratives to delving into familial ties and self-identity, each artist will contribute to a rich tapestry of expressions that collectively celebrate the significance of Black history.

Geno Harris, the visionary Artist/Curator behind “Shades of Blackness,” emphasizes the event’s importance in providing a platform for artists of color to be authentically themselves. Harris sees his role as a creative mentor and leader, recognizing the responsibility to showcase the value that people of color bring to their communities and peers.

“This exhibition allows me to provide artists of color the freedom and platform to be their authentic selves through imagery created specifically for this event. As a creative mentor, it is incumbent upon us to show that we, as people of color, have something of value for our peers and communities,” says Geno Harris.

Setting the tone for the evening, the event will feature the internationally renowned DJ/Producer John Jammin Collins of Underground Resistance, who will provide a dynamic soundtrack for this memorable occasion.

As part of the program, there will be a special presentation by Artist Nathan Spratt Jr. and Roger Penzabene, Owner of WJZZ Detroit Jazz Radio, to the widow of Detroit Jazz great Marcus Belgrave. This touching tribute adds a layer of historical significance to the event, recognizing and honoring the profound contributions of Black artists to the cultural landscape of Detroit.

By bringing together a diverse group of artists, this event aims to make history by showcasing the unprecedented talent and creativity of artists of color within the city. Attendees can expect an evening filled with art, music, and meaningful connections as the community comes together to celebrate Black history and artistic expression.

Join us on February 10th, 2024, at Brix (1588 Franklin) from 6 pm to 9 pm for an artistic experience that honors the past, celebrates the present, and looks forward to a future where diversity and creativity thrive. “Shades of Blackness” invites everyone to be a part of this momentous celebration of Black art and history in the heart of Detroit.
