Serena Williams, Other Tennis Back Out of U.S. Open

Tennis star sisters Serena Williams and Venus Williams told reporters on Wednesday that the duo will not be participating in the U.S. Open tennis tournament on Monday due to injuries, DEADLINE reported.

The duo are not alone in leaving the tournament — Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal also are no longer playing. According to the article, their withdrawal is the first big tournament (since 1997) without the four stars who primarily took over the sport.

Serena Williams said that she is not playing this time around because of a torn hamstring; Venus Williams is facing a leg injury. Serena Williams experienced an injury at Wimbledon, which made her retire from this tournament and caused her to not attend the Olympics, according to the article.

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the U.S. Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Williams posted on Instagram.

Venus also posted shortly afterward.

“Not the best news from Serena and I today. I, too, am unable to play the U.S. Open. It’s super super super disappointing. Having some issues with my leg all this summer and just couldn’t work through it.”
