The U.S. Senate on Thursday, June 23 readily approved a bipartisan gun violence bill that was deemed “unthinkable” only a few weeks ago, according to a FOX 2 News Detroit article.
The next move is the highly expected passage through congressional approval of what is considered to be major strides made from lawmakers after an onslaught of mass shootings ramping up over the last several decades, according to the article.
Due to GOP procedural delays, concentrated Democratic efforts were held up to put a stop to the firearm violence, according to the article.
The recent actions follow New York and Texas mass shooting-related incidents that shook the nation.
The $13 billion initiative would increase background checks for the youngest gun buyers, according to the article, which would also fund local programs for school safety checks, mental health and violence prevention, according to the article.
“This is not a cure-all for the all the ways gun violence affects our nation,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., in the article. “But it is a long overdue step in the right direction. Passing this gun safety bill is truly significant, and it’s going to save lives.”
