The Detroit Civil Rights Inclusion and Opportunity Department are commemorating Black History Month with their second-annual Black Business Crawl. The celebration will start on Saturday, February 22, and lasts throughout the entire day. This event tailored to all businesses in Detroit who are 51% or more black-owned. Each business will follow its regular business hours, and promotions will be offered throughout the event.
“The Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department is proud to promote our local business owners with events like this,” said Charity Dean, CRIO Director. “Black business owners face many challenges, which makes it imperative that we invest in their success. These businesses are so important to our neighborhoods, and we’re committed to helping them thrive. By supporting each other, we are supporting growth throughout Detroit.”
Businesses such as The Ten Nail Bar, The Upperrow, Cutters Bar & Grill, and Sweet Potato Sensations will be showcased at the expo. The Black Business Crawl was started by the CRIO, which supports new and established black businesses in Detroit.

Here are some interesting black history facts about February 22:
- In 1911, activist and social reformer Frances Ellis Watkins Harper died.
- In 1938, poet Ishmael Reed was born.
- In 1950, legendary basketball player Julius “Dr. J” Erving was born.
- In 1989, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince won the first rap Grammy for their single “Parents Just Don’t Understand.”
