Michigan State University’s Science Gallery Detroit, the first and only North American location of the global Science Gallery Network, is requesting submissions for its third annual exhibition, Future Present: Design in a Time of Urgency. This new exhibition will explore humanity’s nuanced relationship to various forms of design and the impact it has on the future.
Everyone is invited to apply. There are no restrictions on age, education level, research background, country or any other factor. In keeping with the Science Gallery model, proposals should address the topic Future Present: Design in a Time of Urgency and its connection to science and/or art. Entrants should also keep in mind that the exhibitions are geared towards a young adult audience ages 18-25.
“In our community conversations about the third season, we kept returning to the urgency of the problems we face as humans,” said Jeff Grabill, Science Gallery Detroit Director and MSU associate provost for teaching, learning and technology. “We kept returning as well to the power of design to help solve those problems. This exhibition takes up design as a way to address our near future, but it also takes up the challenge of who gets to participate in designing our future—all of us or only some of us?”
Proposals will be reviewed by a Science Gallery Detroit curatorial panel. Applications must be submitted via Science Gallery Detroit’s open call platform by January 31, 2020. The show is slated to take place in fall 2020, containing a total of 20-24 pieces.
