The director of the 1992 classic film, Candyman, did it big over this past weekend with the film gaining popularity with raking in $20.4 million – just in its weekend opening.

The rough amount of tickets sold came to $22,370,000, which overwhelmed the expectation of the near $15 million figure, according to ESSENCE Magazine.

The film even did better than Free Guy, Paw Patrol: The Movie, Disney’s Jungle Cruise, Don’t Breathe 2 and The Suicide Squad together, putting DaCosta in a league of all her own, as she is the first-ever Black female director to have a movie at No. 1 at the domestic box office, according to the article.
