The Broadway bound “Ruby” is a powerful musical that retells the true story of Ruby McCollum, a prosperous Black woman whose 1952 trial for the murder of a white doctor exposed the dark underbelly of the Jim Crow South. Created by the Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, “Ruby” will debut in Detroit on February 7, 2025, at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts. “Ruby” is not just a performance; it is a profound exploration of the untold stories of Black women and their resilience in the face of adversity. The story, originally shared in 1952 by The Pittsburgh Courier and Zora Neal Hurston through regular updates from the trial, shed light on the life of Ruby and became a national phenomenon.

Our role as executive producer represents our first foray into telling untold Black Stories through stage production. In releasing this production, we not only honor Ruby’s legacy but also pay homage to the countless Black stories that deserve to be told.
