For the first time since March 2020, the Belle Isle Aquarium will reopen and welcome the public beginning Friday, July 16.
Although shut down early last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the country’s oldest aquarium made use of its 16-month intermission. While closed and with an investment of $1.2 million, the Belle Isle Conservancy took the opportunity to make upgrades including new exhibits, species, facility improvements and the visitor experience, according to The Detroit News.
The downtown aquarium will open its doors back up from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday, beginning Friday, July 16.
New creatures can be spotted including axolotl salamanders also called a “walking fish” and garden eels, according to the article.
The aquarium, 3 Inselruhe Ave. in Detroit, sits within a 982-acre park.
“What you’re able to see in the gallery is the final result of countless hours of tinkering,” said Danielle Jackson, the conservancy’s director of events and communications, in the article.
