Relive the Glory Days of Detroit Pistons Basketball with “Thirty Five | 20” Exhibition

Pistons fans, rejoice! A brand new exhibition at the Detroit Historical Museum called “Thirty Five | 20” is here to take you back to the thrilling championship seasons of 1989 and 2004. This collaborative effort between the Detroit Historical Society and the Detroit Pistons opened its doors to the public on January 27th in the museum’s new City of Champions Gallery.

“Thirty Five | 20” is a celebration of the grit and determination of the iconic “Bad Boys” of 1989 and the “Goin’ to Work” squad of 2004. Despite being separated by 15 years, these two championship teams share a special place in the hearts of fans for their tough defense, physicality, and unwavering team spirit – the true essence of Detroit Basketball.

The exhibition delves into the stories of these legendary teams, showcasing how they were built, how they developed their signature playing styles, and how they conquered the basketball world in two different eras. Through artifacts, images, and media from both the team and the Society’s collections, visitors can relive the excitement of each championship run.

Let’s rewind to the 1988-89 season. The Detroit Pistons, led by the likes of Isiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, Bill Laimbeer, and the legendary coach Chuck Daly, dominated the regular season with 63 wins. Their relentless pursuit of victory continued through the playoffs, as they took down the Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks, Chicago Bulls, and finally, the Los Angeles Lakers, to claim the NBA championship.

Fast forward to 2003-04, and the Pistons were back on top, capturing their third NBA title under the leadership of coach Larry Brown and MVP Chauncey Billups. This team, featuring stars like Ben Wallace, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, and Rasheed Wallace, battled their way through the playoffs, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks, New Jersey Nets, Indiana Pacers, and once again, the Los Angeles Lakers, to etch their names in Pistons history.

“Thirty Five | 20” is more than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of Detroit Basketball and the values that have made the Pistons a beloved team for generations. So, if you’re a Pistons fan, a basketball enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates stories of triumph and teamwork, head down to the Detroit Historical Museum and experience “Thirty Five | 20” for yourself. You won’t be disappointed!

Thirty-Five | 20 will run through June 23, 2024, in the City of Champions Gallery on the second floor of the Detroit Historical Museum
