“Red Flag” Laws Get Flagged For Possible Racial Discrimination

The Michigan House is getting ready to vote on the four related “red flag” laws today, the Detroit News reported. The worry is that the laws will unfairly target Black and other communities of color.

The laws, designed to allow an individual to petition a court to temporarily take away guns from relatives, current and former partners, patients, and anyone else who poses a threat to themselves or other people.

The bills are a legislative response to the mass shooting at Michigan State University on February 13th. However, Democrats are also concerned the set of bills won’t pass due to their having a slim margin in the House. The Senate already passed their versions of the legislature.

Democrat Representative Kimberly Edwards said she was “on the fence” about voting for the bills if they come to a full vote She said that there’s not enough data from other states regarding the impact of extreme risk protection orders on minority communities or the potential use of those orders by police to target minority communities, according to the Detroit News.
