Achieving a 75-year anniversary is a momentous occasion for any organization. On Nov. 19, the Michigan Chronicle will celebrate precisely that milestone, but the magnitude of this event is even greater than one would typically expect.

The enormity of this anniversary is greater because each year of the 75 we are celebrating represents a season of change, enlightenment and empowerment for the African American community within the city of Detroit and across our region and nation.

Built on a vision rooted in the belief that African Americans were entitled to live as first class citizens, the paper has never waivered in its support of this community. The position it has taken in politics, labor, civic affairs and other community issues have helped the Chronicle grow into the institution it is today.

It is with great pride that I congratulate the Michigan Chronicle for its 75 years of commitment to the citizens of our great city.

However, these accolades would be hollow without recognizing the driving force behind the paper’s editorial focus, the esteemed Samuel Logan and his team. Mr. Logan has served as publisher of the Chronicle for over three decades.

When Real Times Media acquired the Michigan Chronicle in 2004, there was never a question about who we wanted at the helm of this historic publication. In his tenure, he and his dedicated staff have grown the Michigan Chronicle into one of the state’s largest weekly newspapers. The history he has lived and the moments he has helped to create continue to propel the growth of the Chronicle and provide each of us with a fresh perspective on the issues we face today.

For your leadership, commitment and courage to stand up for the sometimes unpopular point of view, with tremendous respect and admiration, I salute you, Sam Logan. Congratulations on the Michigan Chronicle’s 75th anniversary.
