Two of Detroit’s best-known pastors, Dr. Charles Adams and Dr. James Perkins have been breaking barriers all their lives. These spiritual leaders are about to break yet another barrier when they appear as animated characters in an upcoming release of a special edition of the world’s largest Bible knowledge computer game.
On December 7, Michigan-based software company Epic 4D LLC will officially launch the Progressive National Baptist Convention’s version of its popular Great Bible Race video game. The game will be publicly displayed for the first time in Michigan at a 10 a.m. news conference at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church at 18700 James Couzens Fwy, Detroit.
Adams is the senior pastor of Hartford Memorial, and past president of the Progressive National Baptist Convention (PNBC). Perkins is the pastor at Greater Christ Baptist Church and current PNBC president. The PNBC, a 2.5-million member offshoot of the National Baptist Convention, was founded during the turbulence of the Civil Rights movement and included Dr. Martin Luther King among its earlier supporters.
Both Adams and Perkins are among 16 PNBC leaders, past and present, who appear as avatars in a game that incorporates more than 18,000 questions from the Bible in its interactive gameplay. Players get to choose an avatar from eight male and eight female PNBC leaders.
Melvin Claxton, the game’s creator and president of Epic 4D LLC, said his company is particularly proud to be part of the tech resurgence underway in Detroit. He said the game is the first of many educational games his company plans to release in the coming years. The company is already developing major biology, geography and math games for release in 2016, and is currently developing a Detroit-Black history game with the Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs.
“We often hear that video games promote gratuitous violence, sex and even attention deficit issues,” said Claxton, who oversaw the team of international biblical experts and animators who worked on the game. “At Epic 4D, we believe this medium can also be used to engage, inform and educate both young and old.”
Claxton said he is particularly excited that the world’s largest Bible knowledge is made in Detroit, continuing the city’s role as a leader in manufacturing and technology. He said the company plans to release smart phone and tablet versions of the game in the first quarter of 2016.
