As votes for the Aug. 6, 2024, Michigan primary election continue to be counted, the Michigan Chronicle is updating its election story based on the ongoing tabulation of votes by the Wayne County Clerk’s office. The Chronicle is reporting on the Wayne County Commission and 3rd Circuit Court races that have an “impact on all or parts of Detroit.”
In District 2, incumbent Commissioner Jonathan C. Kinloch (D) has garnered 8,566 votes (71.8%) in his re-election bid for a 4-year term. His opponent, Bobby Christian (D), has netted 3,365 votes (28%). It is unclear at this time what percentage of the precincts have reported. District 2 includes numerous sectors of Detroit.
In District 3, incumbent Commissioner Martha G. Scott (D) has a massive lead over three Democratic opponents: Mohammed Alsomiri, Mohammed Hassan, and Sigmunt John Szczepkowski Jr. With 18.3% of the precincts reporting, Scott has received 7,757 votes (83.4%). Alsomiri has 662 votes (7.1%), followed by Hassan with 618 votes (6.6%), and Szczepkowski receiving 259 votes (2.8%). The district includes Hamtramck, Highland Park, and parts of Detroit.
In District 4, with 51.3% of the precincts reporting, Commissioner Cara Clemente (D), seeking a second term on the Commission, is in a much closer race. Clemente has received 3,412 votes (55.1%), to Democrat Lisa Carter’s 2,742 (44.3%). While District 4 is comprised of communities in Ecorse, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, and River Rouge, it also includes a part of Detroit adjacent to these Wayne County cities.
In District 5, veteran Democratic Commissioner Irma Clark-Coleman has an overwhelming lead, with 13,666 votes (90.4%). Her opponent, Steven W. Lett, has 1,364 votes (9.02.%). Write-in votes tallied so far are 87 (0.58%). The number of precincts reporting is not available at this time. District 5 is comprised of communities in Detroit bordered by 8 Mile Road (north), I-75 (east), Greenfield (west) and Grand St. (south).
Other incumbent Wayne County Commissioners representing parts of Detroit but ran unopposed in the 2024 primary are Democrats Monique Baker McCormick (District 6) and Commission Chair Alisha Bell (District 7).
All Wayne County Commission seats are for 4-year terms.
In the Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court race for judge, as of 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 7, John Larkin (Nonpartisan) led two other candidates: Adrienne G. Scruggs (Nonpartisan) and Nicole Leighanne Castka (Nonpartisan). With 52.5% of the precincts reporting, Larkin has 67,461 votes (41.4%), followed by Scruggs with 57,702 (35.4%), with Castka trailing with 37,661 (23.1%). The two candidates receiving the most votes will face off in the Nov. 5 general election. The Wayne County 3rd Circuit Court is the largest circuit court in the state.
