Although only a sophomore at Birmingham Seaholm, 15-year old Essence Biggs of Beverly Hills, Michigan is in step with the state’s veteran prep golfer. Biggs just won The MHSAA Division 2 Regional at the Paint Creek Country Club in Lake Orion, Michigan in October.
A week later at the MHSAA Division 2 State Finals at Michigan State in East Lansing (Forest Acre East Course), Biggs was the Division 2 runner-up as she finished one shot behind the eventual state champion Kim Dihn of Midland Dow.
At the regionals under windy and cold conditions, she won the title in tie-breaking playoff. Biggs and her opponent, her teammate, were tied with a score of 78. Both tied for par in the first playoff, but on the second hole, Biggs hit a 160 yard six iron to five feet to win with a two putt par.
At the state finals under the same conditions at the regionals, Biggs was in a three-way tie after the first day of competition, but broke away when she birdied two of the last three holes to post a score of 77. Her total score was 158 one shot behind the state champion.
“I switched swing coaches in July of this year,” Biggs said. “At the beginning of the season my struggled while I adapted to the swing changes.
“I believed in the changes that my coach Trevor Parkinson was making, I just had to put the negatives out of my mind and go out and play golf. Towards the middle of the season the changes kicked in and my game got really hot. I picked up about 25 yards.”
Biggs had a very successful year at Seaholm. She finished in the top 10 in five of the six of the Maples dual meets. Hher lowest score of the year was a three under par 69 at the Paint Creek Country Club. Her averages for the season was 37 for a nine hole tournament and 77 for an 18 hole tournament. She was selected to the first team in Oakland Actitivities Association and first team all-Oakland County.
Last year Biggs palyed at Walled Lake Central during her freshman year before transferring to Seaholm because of her familiy’s relocation. Biggs made the Kesington Lakes Athletic Association First Team, the Oakland Press All-Oakland County Second Team, and the Observer & Eccentric All-Area Second Team.
