Pink Diamond: Detroit’s New Gem Revolutionizing Beauty and Wellness in the Heart of the University District

Detroit witnessed the grand unveiling of Pink Diamond, a pioneering 9,000-square-foot “beauty mall” situated in the heart of the University District, marking a significant milestone as the 167th business initiated under the auspices of Motor City Match. This distinctive establishment, brainchild of Detroit’s own Katrina Belin, stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, offering an array of services aimed at enhancing both the inner and outer beauty of its clientele.

Pink Diamond isn’t just another beauty salon; it’s a comprehensive wellness hub featuring salon treatments, manicures, facials, full body waxing, massage therapy, reiki, lash extensions, makeup application, and more. The facility also boasts a tranquil sauna and meditation room, alongside a trendy clothing boutique and beauty store, making it a one-stop destination for those seeking rejuvenation and style.

Katrina Belin’s journey to opening Pink Diamond is one of triumph over adversity. Having lost her mother to violence at a tender age and navigating the complexities of the foster care system, Belin’s resolve remained unshaken. She channelled her experiences into fuel for her ambition, aspiring to make a positive imprint on her community. “Pink Diamond is a safe space for women to come to release, relax, and pretty much get away from all of the stresses and worries of the world,” Belin shared, highlighting her commitment to fostering joy and healing.

The name Pink Diamond reflects the rarity and distinctiveness of the services provided, mirroring the precious gem’s uniqueness. Further enriching its community footprint, the establishment is set to host quarterly events focused on women’s empowerment and networking, aligning with Belin’s vision of uplifting and inspiring her clientele.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, recognizing the transformative potential of Pink Diamond, commemorated its opening. “Katrina’s ability to overcome great adversity and open a facility that will provide services to residents in nearby neighborhoods is what Motor City Match is all about,” Mayor Duggan remarked, acknowledging Belin’s remarkable journey and her contribution to the Livernois community, which houses numerous businesses backed by Motor City Match winners.

The business, nestled at 17350 Livernois, benefited from a $50,000 grant from Motor City Match, aiding in its establishment and renovation efforts. With plans to expand its current team of 13, Pink Diamond is poised to create more job opportunities, with a particular focus on employing locals.

Sean Gray, vice president of Small Business Services at the DEGC and steward of the Motor City Match program, praised Pink Diamond’s inception. “Pink Diamond is a rare gem, both literally and figuratively,” he stated. “Katrina has created a sanctuary where women can embrace their unique beauty, find inspiration, and raise their self-perception.”

Motor City Match has been instrumental in fostering a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem in Detroit through 25 rounds of funding, disbursing a total of $15.7 million in cash grants and leveraging an investment of $87.4 million. The program boasts a majority of minority-owned (81%), women-owned (71%), and Detroit resident-owned (68%) businesses, underlining its commitment to diversity and local empowerment. Pink Diamond’s launch not only adds to this legacy but also sets a new standard for beauty and wellness services in Detroit.

Pink Diamond not only serves as a beacon of entrepreneurship and resilience in Detroit but also shines a spotlight on the essence of Black beauty, embodying what it means to be a Black Barbie in the flesh. Katrina Belin’s vision brings to life a sanctuary that celebrates the diversity and richness of Black aesthetics, offering a space where the beauty and wellness needs of Black women are understood, appreciated, and catered to with utmost care. The establishment, with its comprehensive suite of services, stands as a testament to the elegance, strength, and grace that Black beauty embodies, providing a platform for empowerment and self-expression that resonates deeply within the community. Pink Diamond thus not only offers beauty services but also serves as a vibrant canvas reflecting the myriad facets of Black beauty, making it a cornerstone for those seeking to embrace and showcase their heritage with pride and confidence.
