Photographer Alisha Hunter’s work captivates viewers with its vibrant and rich colors, a technique known as “saturation” among visual artists. However, her work goes beyond mere technique; it serves as a heartfelt tribute to the aspirations of Black individuals in Detroit. Through her photographs, she skillfully highlights and uplifts the Black community, symbolically and literally, showcasing their brilliance.
She has made her cultural contribution to the business of brand photography, of giving Detroit businesses a particularly recognizable “look” that customers will associate with their enterprises.
“I noticed a significant gap in the market where many Detroit-based small businesses had amazing services and products, but their photos didn’t tell the same story,” Hunter said. “That’s when I realized I could step in and bridge that gap with my content-based style of personal branding photography.”
“I think it’s dope to work with and uplift Black entrepreneurs, professionals and creatives as their stories and journeys inspire me,” she said.
The love that the lifelong Detroiter extends to her clients has been reciprocated, she said.
“The love and support I’ve received from the Black community in Detroit has been beyond amazing! Working with talented Black entrepreneurs and professionals has been an absolute privilege. They truly get the power of visual storytelling and how it can elevate their brands. It’s thanks to their enthusiasm and trust that my business has flourished. I’m forever grateful for the incredible support I’ve received!”
Hunter’s journey into photography started at a “horrible experience at a big box portrait company,” she recalled.
“When my 6-month-old son cried so much during the session that he ended up throwing up, I knew I could do better than that. Inspired to provide a more enjoyable and personalized experience I picked up my camera six months later when our second son was born, and I never looked back.”
Not only does Hunter do brand photography but also lifestyle and content photography and event photography services for high-level retreats.
“I love capturing authentic moments and helping my clients showcase their unique personalities and stories through dope-ass photos, capturing the energy and essence of those transformative experiences.” She said.
As far as how her business supports Detroit’s current renaissance, Hunter said that she never thought about her venture in those terms. However, “I think we, as Detroiters, are resilient, and I capture what I see. And as a brand photographer, the opportunity to showcase the beauty, talent and resilience of Detroit through the visual stories I capture within the small business world is badass to me. If, by collaborating with local businesses and entrepreneurs, I’m indeed furthering Detroit’s renaissance [then] I’m here for it.”
Hunter was asked how creative enterprises like hers can be supported. Her response highlighted the significance of early-age education and empowerment.
“I believe that those in positions of power have a responsibility to foster an environment that nurtures and supports businesses like mine,” she stated. “One crucial step they can take is to prioritize education and empowerment from an early age. By introducing concepts of entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business math at the elementary level, we can equip our youth with the necessary knowledge and tools to thrive in the business world.
“By integrating these subjects into the curriculum, we can lay a strong foundation for future entrepreneurs, enabling them to develop essential skills, knowledge and a mindset geared toward business success. This early exposure can spark creativity, instill a sense of self-reliance and foster an entrepreneurial spirit that will serve them well throughout their lives.”
