‘People Helping People’ and Midnight Golf Partner for Upcoming Charity Golf Outing

The second People Helping People Charity Golf Outing is on track to raise thousands of dollars for local charities Friday, Sept. 8, at Northville Hills Golf Club, located at 15565 Bay Hill Dr. in Northville. In addition, Detroit native Tayauna Holloway has been selected to receive the 2022 Carl J. Bentley Outstanding Community Service Award.

A recent graduate of Wayne State University with a BA in Social Work, the 23-year-old has been active with Detroit Phoenix Center’s programs and events since she first attended as part of the MLK Day of Service in 2021.  She has attended every event hosted by Detroit Phoenix Center, including networking events, as a dedicated volunteer. In the summer of 2022, she participated in the Summer Leadership Academy; providing excellent leadership to her peers through her service, consistency, attentiveness and follow through on assignments. She served as one of the few representatives for DPC with the Poverty Solutions project; later being highlighted and quoted in their newsletter. Holloway has gone the extra mile, showing up early, running last minute errands, transporting items and people when needed in her personal vehicle, connecting with the youth and staying late hours. To this day, she continues her dedication to the mission at DPC, constantly checking in on upcoming events and opportunities to serve further.

The award ceremony begins at 2:30 p.m. Gameplay starts at 9 a.m.

The golf outing fundraising charity effort is a result of an inspired thought by local businessman Carl J. Bentley who wanted to do more after 23 years working as an executive for Strategic Staffing Solutions. So instead of throwing a party for himself, he decided to help organizations dedicated to helping other Detroiters trying to make it in a tough economy. Bentley has served for decades volunteering for local charities and although he was leaving his career, he wasn’t ready to leave his volunteer activities.

As retirement approached, Bentley called friends and kicked around the idea to host a charity golf outing to benefit local community organizations he has supported over the years.

“I’m not retiring from life. The need is too great to sit on the sidelines,” said Bentley. “I am shifting my efforts into high gear to do more of what I really love – helping families and individuals make it in a tough economy,” said Bentley, who also enjoys playing golf.

The lifelong Detroiter knows tough times having come of age during the last great recession and raising a family in the city of Detroit. He attended Cass Technical High School and Wayne State University. He raised two very successful daughters, and they gave him 3 wonderful grandchildren. He was always a volunteer for local charities.

“Detroit has been very good to me,” said Bentley who once headed the city’s IT Department under former Mayor Dennis W. Archer. “My desire is to give back to the city that has given me so much over the years.”

The purpose of the People Helping People Charity Golf Outing is to raise money and awareness of charities focused on helping people positively change or improve their life in the following ways: strengthening families with a clear focus on supporting individuals and strengthening communities by empowering individuals with programs in recovery, training, or access to affordable utilities.
