Passport Ready: Black Travel Gurus Talk Vaccines and Vacations

Black travelers shared with ESSENCE Magazine how they are bossing up and traveling during the pandemic and how they feel about the COVID-19 vaccines.

It’s been over a year since the world was practically at a standstill since the COVID-19 pandemic turned everything on its head. People know that the Black communities were disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 — coupled with everyday stressors like working on the front line even working from home.

Not to mention racism and the overall exhaustion that comes with the pandemic. So we out here — traveling and living our best life to replenish, rejuvenate, and rest through vacation.

According to ESSENCe, there are only a handful of countries that are currently open to United States citizens visiting — vaccinations are slated to become available for select groups in the US and available to the masses by May 1.

But with or without the vaccine, some people have continued traveling for business and leisure. And some groups have opted to remain home and not travel as there is skepticism around taking the vaccine.

World traveler Jon Roberts received his first dose of the vaccine in February while volunteering at a testing site, according to ESSENCE. Though he resumed traveling prior to getting the shot.

“I actually moved to Mexico during the pandemic and still managed to visit six countries before I was vaccinated,” He told ESSENCE
