Palmer Park Kicks off Freedom Festival: July 9

The Detroit Parks Coalition and People for Palmer Park are set to honor the historic Walk to Freedom march through the Freedom Arts Festival. A free concert and art showcase like no other, capturing the spirit of that incredible day in our city’s history.

In the heart of our city, Palmer Park is where the celebration comes alive. Honoring the Detroit Walk to Freedom through art that speaks volumes and music that stirs the soul. On the lineup, Freedom Sounds featuring an impressive ensemble: Marion Hayden on bass, A. Spencer Barefield strumming the guitar, Alvin Waddles on piano, Tariq Gardner giving us the rhythm of the drums, and the enchanting vocals of Isis Damil.

These artists will breathe life into the music of the Civil Rights era, exploring themes of freedom, activism, spirituality, resistance and more through the lens of legendary artists such as Max Roach, Donny Hathaway, and Bob Marley. Alongside this, original compositions by Marion Hayden and A. Spencer Barefield. They invite you to delve and reflect on Dr. King’s dream – all through the power of music.

But it doesn’t stop there! When the last note of Freedom Sounds fades away, the vibrant beats of King Mellowman and Mellow Runnings will fill the air. It’ll be a reggae dance party you won’t forget, with the liberating sounds of Reggae, Caribbean, R&B, and so much more! Sunday, July 9 from 2pm – 6pm commemorate, reflect, dance, and celebrate – all in the spirit of freedom!
