Our Kids Read two (2) core programs.  They are:

Free Book Festivals – OKR partners nationally with local organizations, authors and donors to bring thousands of books to K-5th grade students.   We hire local storytellers and musicians to bring stories from around the world to life, then allow youth participants to pick 2-3 free books from our book tables of hundreds of books and up to 100 unique titles to choose from across all K-5th grade reading levels.

1:1 Reading Buddy Program – OKR matches adult readers with children in the under-served communities we work with for virtual 1:1 mentoring and reading sessions (over Teams and Zoom).  Each session is 45-minutes, once or twice per week, for 12 weeks.  Both mentorship and literacy are goals of the program.

the poverty line hear 65,000 words or less per week. Jahmal Lake, Our Kids Read’s executive director says, “We are trying to change that narrative. We expose children in our program to 5,000 – 10,000 additional words per week and model strong reading skills to the children in the Reading Buddies program. Students can see their own reflection in faces and stories that build self-esteem and ignite imaginations. We’re committed to advancing our kids’ literacy level one book and one student at a time.”
