Operation Refuge’s Star-Studded VIP Fundraiser to Shine Bright with Artist Ted Ellis and Actor Hill Harper

Operation Refuge, a beacon of hope and community support in Inkster, is set to host a star-studded VIP fundraiser this Friday night. Velma “Pastor Jean” Overman, the non-profit’s executive director, expressed her excitement for the event, saying, “We know the stars will be shining bright for Operation Refuge this Friday night at our VIP fundraiser in Inkster. We are blessed to have the presence and support of nationally known artist Ted Ellis with his art, along with our honorary chair – Frank Eugene ‘Hill’ Harper, actor and political candidate.”

The event, titled “Experience Your History through the Art of Ted Ellis,” will showcase Ellis’s captivating artwork and feature Harper, who recently ran in the August primary to fill the seat of retiring Senator Debbie Stabenow. Harper, a longtime supporter of community initiatives, emphasized the importance of Operation Refuge’s work, stating, “The work that Operation Refuge does with Mother’s Pantry and educational programs for youth in Inkster and surrounding communities is worthy of everyone’s support. It is out of respect for ‘Pastor Jean,’ Operation Refuge volunteers, and supporters that I am grateful to participate.”

The VIP Premiere on Friday, August 23, 2024, promises an evening of art, culture, and community spirit, with additional festivities planned for Family Day on Saturday, August 24. Those interested in attending can find event details, purchase tickets, and explore sponsorship opportunities at www.OperationRefuge.org.

The event has garnered substantial support from various sponsors, with Amazon stepping in as the Gold Sponsor, SMART as the Silver Sponsor, and Schoolcraft College Foundation as the Bronze Sponsor. Other sponsors include prominent organizations such as the Dearborn Rotary Foundation, Park West Foundation, Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice (MCRJ), SEMCA, Wayne Metro Community Action Agency, and Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (MI-12). Michigan Senator Dayna Polehanki, The Telegram Newspaper, Michigan Chronicle, Christ Temple Ministries International, Schoolcraft College, and a host of other community leaders and organizations are also backing the event.

Funds raised through sponsorships and ticket sales will be directed toward expanding two of Operation Refuge’s cornerstone programs: Mother’s Pantry and Camp Inspire. Ted Ellis has also pledged to donate a portion of his art sales from the exhibit to further support the cause.

Mother’s Pantry, established in 2008, plays a critical role in the community, serving 500 families annually by providing essential groceries and household items. The program faces an urgent need for a truck or van to help transport large donations and deliver groceries to families with mobility or transportation challenges.

Camp Inspire, another vital program, has empowered over 200 girls since its inception, with 90 percent of alumni pursuing higher education. The camp currently requires a 15-passenger van to safely transport participants to educational and recreational activities throughout the year.

Operation Refuge continues to make a profound impact on the Inkster community, and this fundraiser represents a significant opportunity to expand their outreach. To learn more about Operation Refuge’s programs or to make a donation, visit www.OperationRefuge.org.
