As of Tuesday, Dec. 3 the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellow Fund of Detroit has raised $580,954 or nearly 47 percent of its 2014 fundraising goal of $1.25 million, which the group hopes to meet by the end of its fiscal year on Jan. 31, 2015.
Of the total amount raised to date, $45,294.65 was raised through the 101st Annual Detroit Goodfellows’ Sales Day on Dec. 1.  Hundreds of Detroit Goodfellows, Detroit police officers and Detroit firefighters sold a special “Goodfellow edition” of The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press in various locations throughout the city.
“We’re so grateful to all Detroiters who generously donate on Detroit Goodfellows’ annual Sales Day as well as throughout the year to ensure there’s ‘no kiddie without a Christmas.’  Funds raised through yesterday’s newspaper sales will supplement the proceeds we netted at our 25th annual Tribute Breakfast honoring the Detroit Police Department.  All in all, this year’s fundraising efforts are off to a wonderful start!” said Therese Yglesias, president of the Detroit Goodfellows.
With all donations collected, Detroit Goodfellows will distribute 35,000 gift packages through Detroit police precincts to needy children in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, Harper Woods and River Rouge from December 6-18.  This year 10,000 dolls will be given to little girls aged 4 – 9 as part of the Goodfellow gift packages containing books, warm clothes, toys and candy.  The packages will be provided to children whose names were submitted by public, private, parochial and charter school officials. It is estimated that one out of every three Detroit public schoolchildren receives a Detroit Goodfellows holiday gift box.
