Norwest Gallery of Art presents ‘Flower Therapy’ a new collaborative art exhibition and fundraiser featuring live flower art installations, from noon to 8 p.m., Saturday, July 17 at Norwest Gallery of Art located at 19556 Grand River Ave., Detroit, MI 48223. Flower Therapy is an immersive live floral art installations curate by Asia Hamilton, chief curator and owner of Norwest Gallery of Art, along with curatorial assistant Simone Bryant. The exhibition will run from July 17 through August 1, 2021, and admission is $20, benefiting the Norwest Community Collaborative’s COVID-19 ‘Gardening Through Grief Project,’ a 501c3 organization.
“The inspiration to curate Flower Therapy came from the great loss I, and many others in Detroit and around the world, experienced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Asia Hamilton, founder and chief curator at Norwest Gallery of Art.
“I am a COVID-19 survivor, however, my mother who caught the virus was not. I lose my mother tragically to this horrible virus, and like so many others I know here in Detroit, and across the country, flowers sent and received were a constant part of my life – a reminder of the grief and loss I am experiencing, and the joy and happiness flowers give me. Flower Therapy is more than just a floral art exhibition, it’s a
fundraiser for a new initiative myself and project partner Kayana Sessom founded called “The Gardening Through Grief Project.” The Gardening Project is a community herb and flower garden, a healing space inspired by my loss and Kayana Sessom’s loss of her father to COVID-19,” said Hamilton.
Flower Therapy’s participating florists, artists, and designers include Denyse Couture, Jessica Dumuro, Joy Bradley of Joy X Design, Nadine Ahmed of Blüm Floral, and Caroline Eells of PassiFloral Studio.
Flower Therapy sponsors include Flowers for Dreams and Thrifty Florist.
“Detroit has suffered so much loss from gun violence to this terrible pandemic that we felt the need for a space of healing and understanding. Flowers helped me through my grief, and this Flower Therapy exhibition is just that, therapy,” added Hamilton.
In addition, Flower Therapy will feature a silent auction of large flower arrangements and gift cards during the opening reception.
Public Opening Exhibition is noon-8 p.m. Saturday, July 17.
