As worries and protest across the country begin to grow regarding the decline of democratic principles, the Farmington/Farmington Hills Democratic Club (FFHDC) is set to participate in a worldwide protest movement on June 14 by organizing a local “No Kings” rally to oppose authoritarianism and political families. Scheduled to occur outside the Farmington Hills Public Library, the demonstration seeks to highlight what the organizers identify as a pivotal moment for democracy in America.
Lloyd L. Banks III, Chair of the FFHDC highlighted No Kings Day is a collective reminder that democracy must never be taken for granted.
“In a time when authoritarianism threatens the very fabric of our republic, we gather to affirm that power belongs to the people not to any one person or party,” Banks III said.
The demonstration aligns with national and international events held on June 14 under the “No Kings” banner a decentralized, grassroots movement that condemns political dynasties and authoritarian tendencies. Locally, the Farmington Hills protest will begin with a brief rally featuring remarks from Farmington Hills Mayor Theresa Rich, State Representative Samantha Steckloff (D-Farmington Hills), and State Representative Jason Hoskins (D-Southfield). Following the kickoff, participants will march along 12 Mile Road with signs and chants designed to engage passersby and raise awareness.
The FFHDC is encouraging attendees to bring homemade signs, water, and wear comfortable shoes for the march. Parking will be available onsite at the library, located at 32737 W. 12 Mile Road. The event is open to all members of the community, regardless of party affiliation, who support democracy, human rights, and civic responsibility.
The protest also coincides with Flag Day, and Trump’s planned military birthday celebration in Washington DC a symbolic date that organizers say highlights the importance of reclaiming patriotic values.
“This is about protecting our rights, uplifting our voices, and renewing our commitment to government by the people, for the people,” Banks said.
The “No Kings” movement has gained traction in recent years as political polarization deepens and public trust in democratic institutions declines.
According to a 2024 Pew Research Center study, only 20% of Americans say they trust the federal government to do what is right most of the time, down from 77% in the 1960s. The same study found that nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the country’s political system needs major reform.
In response, grassroots groups like the FFHDC are mobilizing to remind citizens of their power. Participants will also have access to voter registration information, as well as opportunities to sign up for future civic engagement initiatives. For Banks and his fellow organizers, the protest is as much about hope as it is about resistance.
