Despite drawing several celebrities to Michigan Stadium, the second meeting ever between the Michigan Wolverines and Texas Longhorns didn’t go as planned for the No.10 ranked Wolverines. The team’s 23 game home win streak fell to the No. 3 ranked Longhorns in a game that was dominated by Texas in the first half of play. Spotted in attendance included Actor Matthew McConaughey, former NBA players Chris Webber and Scottie Pippen, former MLB player Derek Jeter, and more.
Michigan’s Offense struggled again, plagued by turnovers and not getting a touchdown in the game until late in the fourth quarter. The Texas Defense forced a total of three turnovers in the game, two of which turned into points for the Longhorns and ending drives for the Wolverines.
The Wolverine’s Defense, one of the best in the country, was up against an offense that might end up being the best they will face all season. Texas QB Quinn Ewers threw for 103 yards and a touchdown in the opening quarter alone, to come out and take control of the game early. Ewers would follow that up with a 100 yard second quarter performance and a second touchdown. Behind an efficient passing and rushing attack, the Longhorns would lead at half time 24-3 over the Wolverines.
With the way Michigan has been known to outperform their opponents in the second half of games, hope of a comeback was still alive in many fans’ minds. However digging a hole this deep against a top five opponent proved to be too much in the end. QB Davis Warren did indeed out gain Ewers in the second half with passing yards (153 yards to 43 yards) and Michigan would outscore Texas in the half (9 to 7), but it wasn’t enough.
When the final whistle blew, Michigan’s 23 game winning streak at home and 16 game winning streak overall would come to an end. It’s hard to win a game when you lose the turnover battle (-3) and score only one touchdown, especially against an opponent like Texas. Michigan Head Coach Sherrone Moore spoke about getting better in the post game press conference saying “What are we going to do to get better, that’s all we are worried about right now. We’re going to take all we can on all three phases to get better”. His message to the team after was simple, “We have to do it (get better) together. We can’t finger point and you find out who you are as a team when adversity strikes”.
Next up for Michigan (1-1) is another home game as they host the Arkansas State Red Wolves (2-0) next Saturday at noon in Ann Arbor. Texas (2-0) will return home and play against the University of Texas San Antonio Roadrunners (1-1).
Final Score: Texas 31 – Michigan 12
