NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter hosts annual NFL Draft Party for charity

The NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter will host its annual NFL Draft Party, Friday, April 26 from 6-10:00 p.m. in downtown Detroit at Trust Lounge (205 West Congress Street). The charity event will be hosted by Detroit Lions defensive end Romeo Okwara and a host of other current and former NFL players. Celebrities and influencers will also join them for a night of fun and philanthropy.

Former Lions safety and current NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter Vice President Ron Rice along with Reggie Lee and Scott Hankins started this fundraising event eight years ago, featuring

a mixture of guests from the sports, entertainment, and businesses worlds.

The evening benefits the Alumni Student Athlete Scholarship Fund supporting college bound male and female high school seniors in Wayne County. The NFL Alumni believes that student athletes should be recognized for their academic achievements and encouraged to pursue goals beyond athletics.

“As an organization, one of the most important things you can do is give back,” said Lee. “This event is something we can say is tangible, it benefits the students directly, they can use the money right away, and it helps them on their pursuit of higher-education.”

The 2019 NFL Alumni Draft Party will feature celebrity bartenders, live DJ, dancing, silent auction, swag bags and more! Tickets are $100, which includes a premium open bar presented by Tito’s Vodka, Courvoisier Cognac, Makers Mark Whisky, and heavy hors d’oeuvres. Tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite at 2019nfladraftparty.eventbrite.com.

In March, the NFL Alumni Detroit Chapter awarded a total of $20,000 in scholarships to male and female student-athletes in the Wayne County area. Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and Detroit native Devin Funchess was the keynote speaker and the eight students each received a $400 gift certificate from Microsoft.

“The kids look up to us, especially in the Detroit community,” said Okwara who agreed to host once he heard the event was for charity. “They look up to Lions players and athletes in general and us helping them with their education will help better their situation. I think an education is the most important thing a child can receive.”

As of now, the Lions have a total of nine draft picks, including one in the first round at No.8.
