After WWJ reporter Vickie Thomas recently announced her retirement, starting April 29, on social media she’s off to start a new chapter in her life now with the City of Detroit.
She will be joining Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration as communications director, the Detroit Free Press reported. She announced her change Thursday on-air, and the news spread like wildfire on social media as many people congratulated her and wished her well.
After she retired from broadcasting, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and WXYZ-TV (Channel 7) anchor Dave LewAllen, congratulated her work. The Wayne County Commission declared April 22 as Vickie Thomas Day also.
Thomas joined the station in 1991; she will continue a weekly podcast, “Black Business Minute,” according to a published report.
“Thomas follows Graham Davis, the city’s former communications director who died in 2020 from colon cancer complications, in that role,” according to the article. “Davis was Michigan’s first new-media director under former Gov. Jennifer Granholm.”
