RUNdetroit kicks off their grand opening weekend with a group run/walk on Saturday, June 1st at 8 am. Post run baked goods and beverages from nearby Avalon Bakery and Motor City Brew Works await returning runners and walkers.

In the coming weeks, RUNdetroit will begin hosting local medical and fitness professionals speaking on a variety of topics related to running and walking, including stretching and dealing with common injuries. A full schedule of events can be found on the store’s website; www.run-detroit.com.

The store will be open 7 days a week; Weekdays 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 10 am-7 pm, Sunday 11 am-5 pm.

RUNdetroit is owned by Detroit residents Justin Craig and Alia Polsgrove. Polsgrove is a Michigan native and MSU grad, returning to the Midwest after 7 years in Seattle.

“We had been coming back to Michigan several times a year for running events and saw a real need for a retailer to serve the running population living and working within the city,” notes Craig. Prior to their move, Craig was involved with the opening of West Seattle Runner, a runningspecialty retailer.

The RUNdetroit building began its life as a showroom and service center for Willy’s Overland in 1917. In an interesting twist, it turns out that Polsgrove has a family ‘history’ with the building in its later years. Her grandfather, a union plumber employed by Detroit Public Schools in the 1960s, was a frequent visitor to the building in the years it was used by DPS as a warehouse and shop facility.
