The next chapter in the rebirth of Michigan Central Station is about to unfold with the announcement of NoMad Detroit, a luxury lifestyle hotel set to open in 2027 inside the historic former train depot. This will be Hilton’s first NoMad property in the United States, part of a bold collaboration with Ford Motor Company to reshape the iconic structure into a cornerstone of Detroit’s future.

A nearly 180-room hotel, NoMad Detroit will occupy the top five floors of The Station at Michigan Central, an ambitious 30-acre tech and cultural hub in Corktown. The hotel will also include 30 suites, luxury wellness facilities, and a signature restaurant and bar housed within the station’s restored historic carriage house and restaurant spaces.

The project signals the continued transformation of a long-abandoned landmark into a destination that blends innovation with history. Originally opened in 1913 and designed by the same architects behind New York City’s Grand Central Terminal, the Michigan Central Station is now poised to host guests overnight for the first time in its 110-year history.

Bill Ford, executive chair of Ford Motor Company, highlighted that a year after opening Michigan Central Station to the world, the vision to create a global innovation hub and a destination symbolizing Detroit’s future is well underway.

“Together with NoMad and Hilton, we are now announcing the next phase of our ambitious vision, offering visitors and the community a unique hotel destination and memorable food and beverage experiences in this iconic landmark,” Ford said.

“The new NoMad Detroit hotel will not just be a place to stay, but an energetic and exciting gathering place for years to come.”

The announcement comes as Michigan Central celebrates nearly a year of renewed activity. After a six-year restoration effort, the station reopened in June 2024 and has since welcomed nearly 300,000 visitors. Today, it houses everything from multinational corporations to small businesses and startups, forming a growing tech ecosystem anchored by Ford.

Andrew Zobler, Founder & CEO of Sydell Group, emphasized NoMad has built a reputation for developing hotels that take inspiration from the history, art, design, and culture that make a place unique, and NoMad Detroit is poised to be no exception.

“A city steeped in history with an incredibly bright future, NoMad Detroit is part of an ambitious project that is transforming The Station at Michigan Central into a center for commerce, innovation, c, community and culture,” Zobler said.

“As we continue the international expansion of NoMad from the iconic London location, with plans to launch in Detroit and Singapore and more in the works, we look forward to giving travelers a chance to experience our unparalleled luxury in the most vibrant destinations forward-looking while also celebrating the past.”

Detroit’s legacy as a UNESCO City of Design will be reflected in the hotel’s interior, which will spotlight the work of local artists and makers throughout guest rooms and public spaces. The creative integration of local design and history continues NoMad’s tradition of shaping immersive hospitality experiences that are both globally appealing and locally grounded.

Hilton views this latest NoMad venture as a strategic expansion of its global luxury portfolio. NoMad Detroit follows recent brand moves into Singapore and London and is part of Hilton’s broader effort to plant luxury flags in key cultural capitals.

Kara Randall, Hilton’s vice president of luxury and mixed-use development, highlighted that this project is one of many new locations for Hilton’s luxury brands, following announcements in Turks & Caicos, Egypt, Singapore, and India, with Detroit next.

“With our existing NoMad footprint in London and NoMad Singapore in the pipeline in Asia, we chose to announce our next NoMad project with Ford, who, like Hilton, represents iconic American companies at this quintessential crossroads for U.S. travel in the historic renovation of Michigan Central Station,” Randall said.

“This project champions Detroit rejuvenates a historic landmark, and marks Hilton’s luxury debut in Michigan, part of Hilton’s aim to serve every stay occasion in every location.”

Once open, NoMad Detroit will offer guests sweeping views of Corktown, downtown Detroit, and even Canada while also serving Michigan Central’s growing network of startups, entrepreneurs, and visitors. The hotel will be part of Hilton Honors, the company’s loyalty program, which allows members to redeem points, access exclusive discounts, and utilize Hilton’s app-based services.

With Detroit attracting more than 16 million visitors a year and strengthening its position as a design and technology hub, the arrival of NoMad represents more than a luxury lodging option; it is a symbol of the city’s ongoing evolution.

NoMad Detroit joins a growing list of luxury hotels globally under Hilton’s banner, with more than 500 properties and nearly 100 more in development, including the Waldorf Astoria in Costa Rica and Osaka and Sax Paris. For Detroit, the arrival of NoMad promises to be a defining moment in its resurgence, where the grandeur of the past meets the pulse of the future.

Josh Sirefman, CEO of Michigan Central, is proud to welcome the NoMad brand to Detroit, bringing world-class hospitality to one of the country’s most iconic buildings.

“NoMad’s track record of thoughtfully integrating into culturally significant places and for creating spaces that celebrate local character made them a natural fit,” Sirefman said.

“This partnership is a continuation of our work of turning The Station at Michigan Central into a global destination that serves residents and attracts visitors as well as inspiring entrepreneurs, industry, and creatives.”
