The spirit of Detroit thrives when its leadership reflects the diversity, dedication, and determination of its community. The Downtown Detroit Partnership (DDP) has made a decisive step toward that vision with a pivotal update to its Board of Directors. This week, DDP welcomed influential leaders to its board while honoring the dedication of retiring members who shaped the city’s progress. The announcement also marked a significant leadership shift as Robert G. Riney, president and CEO of Henry Ford Health, assumed the role of Vice Chair. Riney assumes the role following the retirement of Daniel J. Loepp, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, who has been a longstanding and impactful member of the board.
In addition to Riney’s new role, five prominent local leaders have joined the board. Each brings valuable expertise to the organization’s mission to create a vibrant and thriving downtown Detroit. The new board members include Interim Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, Hassan Beydoun, Group Executive for Economic Development and Counsel to the Mayor, Michigan State University President Kevin Guskiewicz, Nicole Sherard-Freeman, Chief Operating Officer and President-Elect of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, and Joshua Sirefman, Chief Executive Officer of Michigan Central.
DDP CEO Eric B. Larson highlighted the importance of these appointments. “The DDP Board is actively involved in driving our mission to create a vibrant, safe, and thriving Downtown. Our team relies on this diverse group of leaders to guide our initiatives. We are thrilled to have their support as DDP continues to help shape the future of Downtown Detroit.”
Each new member brings distinct leadership and a track record of service. Todd Bettison, as Interim Chief of Police, has extensive experience in public safety and community engagement. His presence reinforces DDP’s commitment to a secure and welcoming downtown environment. Hassan Beydoun’s role as a key advisor to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan underscores the importance of strategic economic growth for the city. His expertise is critical as DDP seeks to strengthen economic opportunities for Detroit residents and businesses.
Kevin Guskiewicz, President of Michigan State University, represents the intersection of education and innovation. His leadership will support efforts to ensure downtown Detroit becomes a hub for academic partnerships and forward-thinking solutions. Nicole Sherard-Freeman brings a wealth of knowledge from her work with the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan. Her focus on community investment aligns with DDP’s goals of ensuring development benefits the broader Detroit community. Joshua Sirefman, as CEO of Michigan Central, brings expertise in mobility and technology. His work will advance Detroit’s position as a leader in these growing sectors.
These additions come as DDP also recognizes the contributions of its retiring members. Peter Cummings, executive chairman and CEO of The Platform LLC, played a key role in the redevelopment of significant parts of the city. Richard “Ric” DeVore, outgoing president of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, has been a driving force in philanthropic investments benefiting Detroit communities. Kenneth Hayward, vice president at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, worked tirelessly to champion community relations and health initiatives. Former Detroit Police Chief James White contributed to public safety efforts during a transformative period for the city.
Cindy Pasky, founder, president, and CEO of Strategic Staffing Solutions and Chair of the DDP Board, expressed gratitude for the outgoing members’ service. “We are deeply grateful to the retiring Board members for their invaluable contributions to the Downtown Detroit Partnership and the broader community. As we step into the new year, we embrace new opportunities. With Bob as Vice Chair and our refreshed leadership team, we are excited for all that we will accomplish together.”
The updates to the DDP Board represent a purposeful approach to ensuring downtown Detroit’s leadership reflects the community it serves. Each appointee brings a unique lens to the challenges and opportunities ahead. Together, they aim to address critical issues such as public safety, economic development, and community investment.
For Detroiters, this leadership transition signifies a commitment to building on progress while remaining rooted in the city’s values. The DDP continues to focus on creating a downtown that is not only thriving but also inclusive and accessible. These leadership changes reflect a forward-thinking vision for the future of Detroit.
