New Greenway Named in Honor of Former Mayor Dennis Archer

DETROIT – It was a celebratory announcement after City Council approved the naming Detroit’s newest greenway. Mayor Mike Duggan stood with former Mayor Dennis Archer as the new pedestrian path was named in Archer’s honor.

Initial phases of construction began at the end of 2019. The final phase started in October and extends the greenway from East Jefferson to the Detroit Riverwalk.

The City of Detroit hopes to honor Archer’s legacy who served as mayor from 1994-2001.

“Mayor Archer deserves to be honored for what he has done for this city,” Mayor Duggan said. “Having this gem on the east side named for such a prominent eastsider is the least we can do for such a tireless advocate and champion of Detroit. On behalf of all Detroiters, I want to thank him for his service to this city.”

Archer is active walker and at one time, he would jog miles across the eastside of the city.

“This is exciting,” Dennis Archer said. “I enjoy walking and I enjoy being out. One of things that a greenway will do, you will get a chance to think, you get a chance to be at peace, you get a chance to have people come together, and to exercise which is a good thing for all of us.”

The new green way is a partnership between the City and the Detroit Riverfront Conversancy.

The Mayor Dennis Archer Greenway provides a pedestrian-friendly access to amenities between Chene and McDougall streets while also providing neighborhood access to the riverfront. By the end of 2021, the $4.9-million, 1.2mile will run from Vernor Highway to the Riverwalk.

Former Mayor Dennis Archer played a key role in developments, including land acquisition and negotiations to keep the Detroit Tigers downtown with the construction of Comerica Park. Archer also played a vital role in bringing three new casinos to Detroit.
