In 2023, Neighborhood Grocery burst onto the scene, capturing the hearts and appetites of the city as the first Black-owned grocery store to grace its streets in over a decade. The brainchild of owner and founder Raphael Wright, this establishment was more than just a place to pick up groceries; it was a symbol of resilience, community, and education. Now, in 2024, Neighborhood Grocery is taking its commitment to the next level with a month-long celebration for Black History Month that promises to engage, educate, and entertain.
Raphael Wright’s journey to opening Neighborhood Grocery was not without its challenges. Six years of fundraising and tireless dedication culminated in the store’s soft opening in October, marking a significant milestone for the community. Since then, Wright has remained true to his promise of not only providing better food options but also fostering a sense of belonging and empowerment within the neighborhood.
As February unfolds, Neighborhood Grocery is gearing up for an extraordinary series of events that celebrate art, food, education, literature, and community relief. With activities designed for all ages, Wright ensures that every member of the community feels supported and informed about the food they consume, the vibrant creativity of Detroit, and the abundance of opportunities available to them.
“Food is what brings us all together,” remarks Wright. “We can’t truly celebrate without good food, and it’s essential to recognize the profound historical and cultural significance of food in our nation and on this planet.”
The festivities kick off on February 10 with “The Souper Bowl,” a mouthwatering event featuring gourmet soups from The Kitchenista and Vegan Baddies. From noon until 9 pm, attendees can indulge in a variety of delectable soups while basking in the warmth of community spirit.
On February 24, Neighborhood Grocery invites guests to “The Culinary Art Show,” a sensory extravaganza from 3 pm to 9 pm. This event promises an immersive experience combining food, wine, and art from local talents such as Ffty, Zuri X Zuri, Tony Rave, Indy Solomon, and Rare Candy Slice. As guests feast their eyes on exquisite artwork, they’ll also savor culinary delights crafted with passion and creativity.
Throughout the month, Neighborhood Grocery serves as a hub of activity, hosting workshops, discussions, and demonstrations that delve into the rich tapestry of Black history and culture. From cooking classes that celebrate traditional African cuisine to book clubs exploring literature by Black authors, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
In addition to the celebration of culture and creativity, Neighborhood Grocery remains committed to supporting the community in practical ways. From food drives to financial literacy workshops, Wright ensures that his store serves as more than just a place to shop—it’s a cornerstone of empowerment and opportunity.
