The Motor City Cruise will celebrate Black culture and achievement during its Black Excellence Game on January 22, facing the Grand Rapids Gold, the Denver Nuggets’ affiliate, in an event that unifies history, inspiration, and pride for the future.
Pre-Game Activities
Fans will have plenty to explore before tip-off:
· College Fair: Led by Pistons’ Toheeb Bello, offering students insight into education.
· Black-Owned Business Market: Pop-up booths with Detroit vendors and entrepreneurs.
· Community & Cultural Organizations: Engage with groups such as the Divine 9 and the Wright Museum.
Arena Engagement
Enjoy concourse drumline shows and an interactive ‘I Have a Dream’ mural. Balloon arches and videoboards spotlight organizations supporting Black culture.
Culture and Cuisine
Motown, jazz, and hip-hop set the mood. Enjoy food from local Black-owned restaurants.
The celebration continues during the game with captivating moments that spotlight Black excellence:
· Black Excellence Video: Local employees and HBCU alumni reflect on Black excellence.
· Halftime: Drumlines and step squads perform, led by Toheeb Bello.
Community Recognition
The game honors local Black leaders and includes Detroit trivia celebrating the city.
· A Cruise Community Playmaker—educator, entrepreneur, artist, or activist—will be recognized.
· Divine 9, HBCUs, and small businesses will be acknowledged for community impact.
Lasting Impact
The ‘Legacy Canvas’ mural, made by attendees, will be displayed in the community to inspire Detroit.
