Detroit is gearing up for the Lions season opener this Sunday at Ford Field. The energy is palpable, but so is the heavy traffic expected to flood the streets. With a kickoff scheduled for 8:20 p.m., traffic jams are likely to start around 2 p.m., especially near the I-75 Grand River and I-375 Madison exits. To dodge this headache, fans should consider taking M-10 into the city.
In addition to the expected congestion, visitors must navigate a few closures and adjustments to transportation services. The People Mover, a convenient way to move around downtown, is out of commission for track replacement until mid-November. So if you’ve relied on that in the past, it won’t be available for this home opener. However, the QLINE, running along Woodward, will be in full swing and will remain open until midnight on Sunday. This makes it a solid option for those looking to avoid parking altogether. The QLINE is also offering a $5 Park and Ride deal from Wayne State’s Lot 12, located at 6050 Woodward Avenue by the Amsterdam stop.
Tailgaters, get your plans in order now. Parking spaces are already in high demand, and some of the most popular spots, like those in Eastern Market, are sold out. If you’ve been fortunate enough to secure a reservation, Eastern Market’s tailgating area opens at 2 p.m. For those planning to park elsewhere, advance reservations through the ParkDetroit app will save you some stress. It’s a smart way to ensure you have a spot and aren’t left scrambling at the last minute.
It’s also worth remembering that tailgating in the streets isn’t permitted. Keep your party in designated lots, and if you’re parking on the street, make sure it’s in a legal, metered zone or an unmetered street that allows parking. Blocking crosswalks, driveways, alleys, or fire hydrants could lead to tickets and towing, which no one wants on game day.
Parking scammers are something else to look out for. Unauthorized individuals have been known to direct people to park on vacant lots, charging them for spaces they don’t own. If you park in these areas, your vehicle could be towed by the actual property owner. Stick to regulated parking lots that clearly post their rates, and know that the city will have inspectors on duty to ensure lots aren’t charging more than city ordinance allows.
With a little planning and foresight, you can make your way downtown for the Lions opener without too much hassle. Whether you’re heading straight to Ford Field or stopping for a tailgate along the way, be sure to keep these tips in mind for a smooth game day experience.
